This is a definitive collection of New Orleans Funk featuring acknowledged masters of funk next to some of the earlier artists who shaped the meaning of funk. The album is also filled with many rare, sought after and undiscovered funk tracks. It covers the period from the emergence of New Orleans Funk in the early 1960's through to the mid-seventies. The record is an essential part of anyone in any way interested in Funk's record collection. It has some vital ingredients in it that you can't find elsewhere. With the sound of the New Orleans Funeral March Bands, Mardi Gras Indian Tribes and Saturday Night Fish Fries all as inspiration New Orleans Funk developed into a unique sound. New Orleans is a port town. Originally owned by the French, this was where many slaves were brought from the West Indies. Many of these slaves came from Haiti and brought with them the religion of Voodoo and its drums and music. It became one of the first parts of America to develop a strong African-American culture leading to the invention of Jazz in the early 1900s. A main feature of Jazz in New Orleans were the Jazz Funeral Marching bands. Solemn Brass bands accompanying a coffin would, on burial, be joined by a second line of drummers and dancers which would turn the event into a celebration of the spirit cutting free from earth. This African tradition is strong in New Orleans and still goes on to this day. The backline drums play a syncopated style that is neither on the beat nor the off-beat. It is these rhythms that are the basis of New Orleans Funk. The album comes with a booklet presenting a historical explanation to how and why this music came about, and with lots of information about the people involved.

Charles Bradley - No Time For Dreaming

It's taken just two short years for Dunham Records - an imprint of Daptone Records - to establish itself as one of the most captivating creative forces in soul music. The brainchild of guitarist/producer Thomas "Tommy TNT" Brenneck, Dunham's indelibly atmospheric sound is epitomized by its flagship artist, Menahan Street Band. After releasing a handful of crucial 45s, Dunham Records prepares to enter the next phase of its evolution with the debut album of its inaugural vocalist, Charles Bradley.

Charles Bradley's voice has evolved from a lifetime of paying dues, having nomadically labored for decades at various day jobs from Maine to Alaska - singing and performing in his spare time - before re-settling in his hometown Brooklyn and eventually finding a musical home at Dunham. In his distinctively rough-hewn timbre one hears the unmistakable voice of experience - each note and gruff inflection a reflection of his extended, sometimes rocky, personal path. It's only fitting that No Time For Dreaming's producer Brenneck (also a member of The Dap-Kings and The Budos Band) would recognize in Bradley a kindred musical spirit - a singer whose performances exude both raw power and poignant beauty. Recorded at Dunham Studios, and mixed at Daptone Records' internationally revered "House of Soul" Studios, No Time For Dreaming is the inspired sound of an awakening.

SHAWN LEE'S PING PONG ORCHESTRA:HOOKED UP CLASSICS!!

WORLDWIDE RELEASE ON DECEMBER 7, 2010.

Shawn Lee dons his Ping Pong Orchestra hat for an album inspired by the Hooked On Classics series of the early 1980s. This popular series of albums (arranged by Louis Clark of Electric Light Orchestra fame) took well-known classical pieces and gave them a contemporary re-working, mostly adding a disco flavor. Lee throws his new musical twist on the idea, taking 12 favorite classical tracks and squeezing them through the Ping Pong Orchestra machine.

While Lee has spent most of the year releasing and working on albums featuring vocal collaborations (the recent "Sing A Song" and upcoming "World of Funk"), this Ping Pong Orchestra album puts Lee back in library-record mode, creating cinematic instrumental music.

"The 1812 Overture" is re-interpreted with a heavy dub re-rub, while "Swan Lake" and "Peter and the Wolf" receive a dose of squelchy moog-like bass-lines, and even "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" and "Funeral March" is given a head-nodding backbeat. Lee left room for his own string-laden cover of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" (also recognizable as the 2001 Space Odyssey theme.) "These are some of the greatest themes and melodies ever written," says Lee.

Mixing respect with cheek, and a need to funk-everything up, Lee covered tracks by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Richard Wagner, Erik Satie, Sergei Prokofiev, Richard Strauss, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Maurice Ravel, Edvard Grieg, Sergei Prokofiev, and Frederic Chopin. From big string sounds, horns, organ, dulcitone, clarinet, harmonica, melodica, bass melodian, orchestral percussion, harpsichords, flutes, sitars, guitars, and beyond, everything is played live, with no sampling. "What a pleasure to have such great material to work my musical mischief with, he adds. "I approached this project with equal amounts of respect and irreverence - this was essential to the concept."

The end result is an album that will introduce new listeners to legendary pieces of music, and is set to turn the heads of classical music fans.

BAJKA'S ESCAPE FROM WONDERLAND IS OUT NOW!

Bajka the singer/songwriter with the unique voice the one you recognize immediately, releases her first solo album "Bajka in Wonderland" in 2010 on ChinChin Records. Her name means fairytale in slavic, she was born in India, grew up in South Africa and has been releasing music for almost 15 years, doing feature colabs for artists like Bonobo, Radio Citizen, Beanfield, etc.. Fortunately you can now listen to a remarkable and outstanding musical vision, an album with eleven tracks! This was made possible through the coóperation with the producer and composer team Daniel Regenberg and Jerker Kluge, both profiled Jazz musicians with a long list of projects and recordings of their own, with the capacity to organise a production of such an outstanding project.

"Ιn Wonderland" has been released on ChinChin Records as a remix album called "Escape from Wonderland" at September 17, 2010, including 14 fantastic remixes from: Bahama Soul Club, Basement Freaks, Bebo Best, Club des Belugas, Dr. Rubberfunk, Fab Samperi, Jojo Effect, Minimatic, MopMop, Renegades of Jazz, Smoove, Solo Moderna, Tim McVicar, Valique.

On the B-Side, Ari-Up of the Slits delivers “Bed Athletes” a singjay vocal tune in a classic dancehall style. Lyrically she twists the original children’s song melody into a positive minded and humorous sex education course for the “underground youth”, with a verse for the men and another for the women, emphasizing the importance of physical fitness and mental training for mutual enjoyment of each others company in bed, even suggesting that men “learn Ninjitsu” so the art of “Japanese fighting” can be “used ‘pon daggering”.

DUBMATIX 'SYSTEM SHAKEDOWN REMIXED' SOON TO COME!

Currently working with IrieItes on releasing the System Shakedown Remix Album to be issued on coloured vinyl in early Spring of 2011. So far we've got a great line up of artists involved including Zion Train, Vibronics, G. Corp, Aldubb, Webcam Hi-Fi, Nate Wize, Marcus Visionary, Rob Smith, Felix Wolter, Subatomic Soundsystem, Lion Dub and Mungo's Hi Fi.

FEMI KUTI'S "AFRICA FOR AFRICA'' NEW ALBUM AVAILABLE ON NOVEMBER 8TH.

Like his father before him there is no evidence of a mellowing with age, in fact quite the reverse. This is an album dominated by the bitterness of one who feels he has been had. Had by the government, by the governors and the whole political class. Had by an international system that displays proudly its benevolence towards his continent while stripping its resources bare, shitting on its environment from a height and condemning millions to a carousel of subsistence and death.
As he wonders aloud on ‘Bad Government’ how is it that Africa produces such great footballers, doctors and other individuals while its countries are in a mess? Most of the tracks on this album have the intensity and punch that makes his live shows so unforgettable but perhaps a little more variety in pace would make the album a better listen. On the other hand in this digital age, how much does that matter?
And if a few of the tracks sound familiar that could because — like the opening track ‘Dem Bobo’ — they have appeared on other albums (in this case Africa Shrine).
Hopefully, this album will get into the hands of some of the many who’ll be checking out the Musical Fela during its run at the National Theatre in November, while Femi himself is doing a short tour of the UK at the end of November / the start of December 2010.

Coals to Newcastle - The New Mastersounds, From Leeds to New Orleans .documentary film out soon!

In this exciting feature length documentary film, UK funk band, The New Mastersounds, bring the funk back to a post-Katrina New Orleans during Jazzfest 2007.
Leeds, UK – the birthplace of funk? Not quite, but the home town of the rising funk-jazz phenomenon, The New Mastersounds.

By offering the first Jazz degree in Europe, Leeds College of Music attracted scores of talented musicians to this Northern former industrial hub to master forms of music that had been seeping in on vinyl carried by cargo ships from across the Atlantic for decades. A thriving live music scene soon developed in Leeds, and many of these young musicians embraced American funk 'n soul from the 60's and 70's.
Now, England's finest funk jazz band journeys from Leeds to the
birthplace of funk, for 3 performances that coincide with the 2007 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Unsure about bringing sand to the beach (or ”Coals to Newcastle” as they say in Britain), The New Mastersounds try bringing their brand of funk to New Orleans.
With sit-ins and commentary from several New Orleans master musicians, “Coals to Newcastle,” offers viewers a look into the lives of 5 Britons that have been influenced by a uniquely American art form, and a glimpse at the city that started it all as it struggles to retain its culture after Katrina’s devastation.

G-CORP MEETS THE MIGHTY TREE-DUBSTEP DEMON EP OUT NOW ON 12''.

The surprise underground hit taken from the "Dubplates from the Elephant house volume 3" album finally gets its vinyl release. To celebrate its outing G corp have come up with two heavier than lead dubstep refix. Also included is an extended version of the original, re-mastered for the 12”, and a never before released old school dub version. Beat poet and graphic artist Ninety, not only adds his twisted lyrics and style to the cut, but has come up with a limited edition picture bag. Advanced copies have caused a proper stir on the underground scene. This is one class release from what is becoming a very classy new label.

Kabanjak, one half of the block-rockin’ German hip-hop production and DJ duo Ancient Astronauts, presents his own musical vision with his debut solo album Tree of Mystery! Kabanjak not only tackles much of Tree of Mystery’s live instrumentation, including guitars, bass, keys, kalimba, flute, and melodica but also teams up with various other vocal and instrumental talents: Ulf Stricker provides snapping live drum rhythms, Canadian DMC champion and Juno Award winner DJ Brace provides cuts and scratches, poet Azeem drops conscious rhymes, and Sitali and Rykarda Parasol provide soulful incantations.

NOMO & SHAWN LEE TEAM UP FOR NEW SINGLE, "UPSIDE DOWN"

This collaboration came about almost by accident. NOMO’s Elliot Bergman had spent the better part of the summer building and recording electric kalimbas in Brooklyn, when label-mate Shawn Lee asked him to send over a kalimba track for his new album. Lee, based in London, added some funky drums, bass and a smattering of steel drums, and sent it back to Bergman. When Bergman’s sister, Natalie, heard the instrumental track destined for Shawn's album, she decided that she had to add some vocals. She stayed up all night writing the tune and recorded the vocals in garage band. The happy result is a great groove, and NOMO's first vocal tune in ages.

This 7” tour exclusive is limited to 300 copies, it also features NOMO’s “Nocturne” on the B-Side.

Reggae Roast continues to establish itself as a top quality imprint for exciting new roots music with ‘Evolution’, the new single from Ghetto Priest, which follows the extremely popular ‘Serious’ debut 45 from The Hempolics. Stephen Townsend aka Ghetto Priest is one of the most flamboyant and creative performers to have emerged from the current UK Reggae scene. He honed his vocal talents and artistic persona around the sound system dances of the early 80s, before beginning his illustrious recording career. In 2004 Ghetto Priest released his critically acclaimed debut album ‘Vulture Culture’ for On-U Sound, produced by Adrian Sherwood, and then went on to record lead vocals for Asian Dub Foundation on their hit album ‘Enemy Of The Enemy’. He is currently working on his latest album ‘Sacred Ground’, again with Adrian Sherwood, backed by the legendary Dub Syndicate band, scheduled for released in Spring 2011. ‘Evolution’ is a prime example of Ghetto Priest’s dynamic and emphatic vocal talent. He posses a raw energy and emotion un-matched by many artists of this generation and while constantly pushing at the boundaries of roots music, his style strongly maintains the essence of his Jamaican heritage. This track is a perfect example of how Ghetto Priest’s work can satisfy the body on the dance floor, while at the same time provoke reflection within the minds of his listeners.

RADIO CITIZEN'S HOPE AND DESPAIR IS OUT NOW!

Four years have passed since the release of Berlin Serengeti, the debut album from producer Niko Schabel and friends, aka Radio Citizen. His first album was an all-out assault of electronic music armed with organic tentacles that reached far into an eclectic bag of rough jazz and worldly funk. (...) Schabel creates music that balances being accessible and exciting by way of his ability to blend the electronic with the organic. On Berlin Serengeti he seamlessly glued-together a loose collage of sampled textures and embellished them with gifted musicians and vocalists. On Hope and Despair he takes an even headier blend of raucous live instrumentation and works it into gritty songs and walls of sound with deft mixing and subtle studio trickery all rooted by heavyweight bass lines. His mass ensemble of musical friends often performs together in the Radio Citizen live show that developed after the release of the first album. Their unified musical prowess is reflected in the soloing, the harmonies, and all the interactions, that lift Hope and Despair above its predecessor.
