THE LIBERATORS-THE LIBERATORS(2011)

Sydney-based new afro-funk formation THE LIBERATORS can certainly be said to be off to a smoldering start; with their debut gig taking place at Russ Dewbury’s famous A Night At The Jazz Rooms, the liner notes of their debut album being written by Antibalas frontman Amayo (Daptone Records / Ropeadope / Afrosound Records), and the patronage of DJs such as Gilles Peterson (BBC 1), this group can count on some serious support! Not only does this 10 piece outfit include members of Dojo Cuts among its division, but for their first full-length they also call on the vocal talents of guests such as Jojo Kuo (Fela Kuti / Daktaris / Antibalas), Roxie Ray (Dojo Cuts / Underbelly) and Ghanaian-born Afro Moses. The result is an incredible set of new afrobeat tunes and funky jazz-dance grooves proving the masterful musicianship of this band.
The self-titled debut effort by The Liberators is a solid example of the type of new afro-inspired funk that is rivaling the greatness of classics from 70s Africa. With a fierce array of super heavy guitars, percussion, and horns – all put together with a range of sounds that really portray the full spectrum of their style – The Liberators serve up some sizzling treats! From opening stormer “Multiculture”, to the kicking rhythm of “Rags To Riches”, the uplifting “Liberation” or the jazzy inflections of “Denga” featuring legendary drummer JoJo Kuo on vocals, this album is a tightly delivered assortment of funky afrobeat tunes with a jazz-dance flavor. Turn on your air-conditioning people, the heat is on!

EMPRESARIOS-SABOR TROPICAL(2011)

Sabor Tropical offers a variety musical styles gathered around an overarching Latin influenced sound.  The album will be released on January 11, 2011 on the Washington DC based Fort Knox Recordings, it marks the first full length album by the DC based Empresarios.

What you hear on Sabor Tropical is a mixture of funk, dub, soul, reggaeton, cumbia, salsa, and South Asian sounds.  The individual influences are apparent on most tracks, yet the flow from one to the next is very smooth.  Part of this comes from the fact that the tracks will use a particular element, say a reggaeton bass line, without trying to reproduce the formulaic song version of the genre it comes from.  The other part of this must certainly be that apart from the instruments they play, each of the five members of Empresarios is also a producer.  It takes a lot skill to use what many would consider disparate elements and make them work together well.  Thankfully these guys have what it takes to pull it off.

The album contains fifteen tracks with a mix of songs and instrumentals.  Of the songs, "Sabor Tropical" has a salsa rhythm and is the most up tempo piece on the album.  "Pereo Intenso" and "La Negrita" have reggaeton influences, and work well as dance tracks.  Empresarios keep the reggaeton elements under control, avoiding cliches.  With the exception of "Cumbia" which lives up to the title, the other instrumental tracks are offer dubby beats with a variety of different elements like congas, Asian strings, funk horns, each spicing up the tracks.  "Siesta" could work in the soundtrack to Shaft, while "Sohl" could easily be playing at a Mumbai night club.  "Pensamiento" features hypnotic congas.  I could go on about every cut this way.  The sophisticated production shines through in all the tracks.

TOMMY GUERRERO-LIFEBOAT AND FOLLIES(2011)

More than a decade of tirelessly working his craft has passed since, and has resulted in the album you now behold- “Lifeboats And Follies” is by far Guerrero’s most fully realized sonic collage. The tide of groove remains, but is formed by the far denser and complex interplay of an expanded quiver of instruments and sounds. The simplicity of Tommy’s early work was catchy, but the expansive compositional skill that has shown itself amongst the tracks here is cinematic in scope, offering a richer, more muscular tone and greater depth of emotion. The soup has been thickened, the fire is smoldering, and Tommy is sweating it out all night, every night.
